Interview with Gilbert Achcar
Saturday, July 31, 2010

Dear editor,

Prof. Gilbert Achcar is a renowned Lebanese academician, writer,
socialist and anti-war activist. He left Lebanon in 1983 and taught
international relations and politics at the University of Paris VII
for several years.

Prof. Achcar joined me in an interview to discuss the latest

developments related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israel's

attack on the Freedom Flotilla and the prospect of Israel's

occupation of West Bank and Gaza.

He believes that the Arabs' relations with Israel damages and

undermines the cause and resistance of the Palestinian nation.

The word-formatted version of the interview and Prof. Achcar's

picture is attached.

Best regards

Kourosh Ziabari

-----------------

Arabs' ties with Israel damages the Palestinian cause:
Prof Gilbert Achcar
Kourosh Ziabari

Prof. Gilbert Achcar is a renowned Lebanese academician, writer, socialist and anti-war activist. He left Lebanon in 1983 and taught international relations and politics at the University of Paris VII for several years. Since 2007, Achcar has been Professor of Development Studies and International Relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. He is a frequent contributor to Le Monde Diplomatique and ZNet .

Prof. Achcar joined me in an interview to discuss the latest developments related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israel's attack on the Freedom Flotilla and the prospect of Israel's occupation of West Bank and Gaza.

Kourosh Ziabari: Dear Prof. Achcar, what's your estimation of the prospect of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

Gilbert Achcar: This is extremely difficult to answer because the situation of the Middle East is changing so quickly and frequently that any kind of prediction about the future is always very risky, so what I can say in reply to your question is that in the foreseeable future, there can't be any serious and acceptable compromise leading to a peaceful coexistence between Israel and the Palestinians. The reason is that the Israeli society has been continuously shifting to the right so that more and more extreme branches of Zionism are governing Israel, and therefore it's extremely difficult to imagine that governments like the present government of Israel would make all of the concessions that are required for a true peace with the Palestinians. There can't be any beginning of peace actually without an end to the occupation of the territories that were occupied since 1967, the dismantlement of the separation wall which Israel has been building and the dismantlement of the settlements. These are basic conditions to which of course one should add the immediate lifting of the blockade of Gaza. So, there's absolutely no indication at present that the Israeli government as it is, has any inclination to go in that direction.

KZ: Both of the Palestinians and the Israelis, from a religious viewpoint, claim that the land of Israel belongs to them. Both of them cite the historical evidences and religious implications in this regard. What's your idea about that? How should this interminable conflict come to an end?

GA: This should be hardly debatable among serious people because it's absolutely clear that when the United Nations voted on the partition of Palestine and voted on creating a Jewish state on Palestine which was the goal of the Zionists, it gave 56 percent of the land of Palestine to the Jewish population which constituted only one third of the whole population. Moreover, the majority of this one third were immigrants, the overwhelming majority of whom had been in Palestine less than 15 years, so there is no fair standard on earth by which this kind of resolution could be considered as legitimate and just; it was completely unjust and completely unfair. No people on earth would admit that recently arrived immigrants have a right to establish their own state in their country. However, I believe that a just solution to the problem is one that would not involve any new expulsion of population; it should be a solution based on democratic principles and peaceful coexistence of Muslims, Christians and Jews, Arabs and Israelis in the region. But, for this to happen, the very nature of Israel's relationship with its environment should change whereas what we're seeing now is more and more violence, barbarity and cruelty on the part of Israel.

KZ: Israelis believe and claim that they should have a state with its borders spanned from Nile to Euphrates. This is the "Promised Land" which they recurrently refer to. What do you think about that? Is it a reasonable and justifiable claim?

GA: Even in Israel, very few people subscribe to this view. Only some extremist branches of Zionism believe in this idea. It sounds so absurd that only crazy people can uphold such perspectives. Now, if we had to redraw the map of the world to go back to how the world was 2,000 years ago, we can imagine what a terrible mess would happen in the whole world. Besides, there's much debate even on the fact that the European Jews who came to Palestine in the 20th century are descendants of the Jews who were in Palestine 2,000 years ago. But even if that were the case, and again, if we had to redraw the map of the world as it was 2,000 years ago, why not 3,000 years ago or 1,000 years ago? So the only legitimate claim to a land is that of the people who were living on it in recent centuries. But no Palestinian group among the main Palestinian forces is calling for the expulsion of Jews and Israelis from the Middle East. All of them call for coexistence, but coexistence based on democratic principles and on equal footing, not the present situation of very harsh oppression of the Palestinians and the Lebanese by Israel.

KZ: Some Arab nations are progressively taking steps to normalize their ties with Israel. We can name the United Arab Emirates which invited the Israel's transport and infrastructure minister to an international summit held in Abu Dhabi. Other Arab states, in turn, are making efforts to establish new relations with Israel. Isn't it going to be harmful and destructive for the cause of Palestinian people?

GA: Four countries have established relations with Israel among the Arab states and they are Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and Oman. This is damaging for the cause of the Palestinians, especially when the country betraying them is Egypt which is the largest Arab country. This is a result of the increasing hegemony of the United States over the Middle East, which pushes the Arab governments to establish relations with the state of Israel against the will of their own people. If you look at Jordan and Egypt, you'll see that the overwhelming majority of their population is opposed to Israel and its policies, and this creates a wide gap between governmental policies and what the population wants.

KZ: What's your view regarding the recent Israeli assault on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla? What would happen if another country rather than Israel, say Iran, had attacked the flotilla of 600 international peace activists? Would the international community's response have been the same?

GA: You should ask me what would happen if the United States had attacked the flotilla, because they do such things quite often. But, you're right in saying that Israel gets the least protest in comparison with other countries when it comes to the violation of international law and perpetration of war crimes and crimes against humanity. This judgment is in line with the reports of Judge Richard Goldstone who is a devout Jew and even a devout Zionist, but honest enough for acknowledging the fact that Israel committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. So of course Israel gets much less condemnation than any countries that are opposed to the United States and to Western hegemony. One should say, however, that Israel started to lose even the support of Western public opinion recently, especially since the Gaza war of 2008-2009 which was a brutal and cruel attack on defenseless civilians and was criticized even by traditional friends of Israel. After the attack on Freedom Flotilla, the international condemnation of Israel reached an unprecedented level. A few countries cut their diplomatic relations with Israel in Latin America like Venezuela and Bolivia in the last year and Nicaragua in the current year. A number of countries recalled their ambassadors: we have seen a shift in the stance of public opinion and even a wave of protests has taken shape in the United States. So there's been a real impact and this shows that the Israeli state by its cruelty and brutality is losing more and more ground in the global public opinion.

KZ: The Saudi King has recently made remarks in which he likened Iran's government to the state of Israel and said that these two countries don't deserve to exist. Is this a fair and rational statement? Doesn't it damage the Islamic solidarity and integrity?

GA: First of all, this statement, if true, is a really infamous statement. Putting Iran and Israel on the same level is totally absurd. Israel is a state that has been created through a colonial process and is violently oppressing the original population of the land it seized. Iran is a country which has been there for a long period of history and there was no involvement of colonial powers in its creation. Its government is certainly more legitimate than that of the Saudi kingdom, which was established by armed conquest less than one century ago, and never elected since then. However, the Saudi King meant probably that both the Israeli government and the Iranian government are extremist to his taste. The truth is that the Saudi regime is the most reactionary and the most backward regime in the whole region. They're closer to the Taliban than to anything else in terms of regime and society. Saudi rulers are better advised to change their own regime rather than trying to change the regimes in other countries.

Listen guys these are fairy tales
these stories are used by the Brahmin community to milk the common man.
Making the common man come and kiss their feet bringing breakfast, lunch, dinner and money.
Swamiji sits next to a statue and say this is God and I talk to God all the time.
This is complete nonsense.
If our Stone Gods had so much power than
the muslim and christians would not have
kicked our ass for the last 1000 years.
Our Gods are less than us.
We do all the pujas and built the bridges and the bridges collapse in western worlds millions of bridges and buildings have been built with no pujas or sacrifices to suckers(Brahmin community).
nothing is comming down. In Delhi in preparation or Games we are asking for help for imaginary Ganesha.
Things are not ready and falling apart.
There were no flying monkeys going from mouth and comming from ears.( Ramayana
is a fairy tale)
Please Please do'nt be the milking cows of Brahmins community.
They have sucked our blood for thousands of years and want to enslave us Intellectually.

Shri Kedar Damle Ji,

Jai Shri Ram!

<I am just trying to convey that what is written in Vedanga Jyotish of 14th Century B.C. is trfsue for that time. But due to precession of equinoxes, that statement is not true in our period, nor was it true few thousand years ago.>

This is yet another funny statement from you!  On the one hand, you had said, "But the dispute is about relating Madhu Maas (month) with Chaitra. If it is not quoted in the original text how can you write

*In this Vedic Mantra Madhu Maas (Chaitra ) and Maadhav Maas are said to form the Vasant Ritu.*

which means that you  wanted to know the Vedic mantras that have clubbed Chaitra with Madhu and so on, but at the same time, when given the proofs that the VJ has actually done so, you say that could have been applicable to that time only!  What a strange logic!

That is exactly what is meant by Heads I win and tails your lose!

Is it necessary that I must keep on repeating like a defective audio system that seasons and therefore seasonal months are impervious to the effects of precession of equinoxes?

If you are ignorant of the fact that the Vedic year and therefore Vedic months are seasonal, that certainly is not my fault!

Or is it that you do not know even the minimal geographical fact that seasons are not affected by precession?

Even otherwise also, why don't you use your common sense to judge that the VJ is a work of 1400 BCE i.e. about 1700 years prior to the date when the "almighty" Lahiri nirayana zodiac and the so called sayana zodiac are supposed to have coincided.  Thus there should have been a processional affect of 1700 divided by 72= 23.61  i.e. about 24 days on the plus side, which means that the so called nirayana Magha should have not started simultaneously with the month of Tapas, least of all with the day of Uttarayana, as has been done by the VJ, but earlier by one month at the time of the VJ!

Once again, it is also clear that you have not gone through the  Valmiki Ramayana from cover to cover but are discussing the work like a scholar without being one!

At least go through the work and then you will see it for yourself that Chaitra has certainly been described as the start of the Vasanta Ritu in the VR itself!

It is also clear that Shri P V Mendki has either not gone through the VR from cover to cover or is deliberately hiding the fact that that work has described Chaitra as the first month of Vasanta Ritu instead of Shishira Ritu since then he may not be able to market his "Rama-janma-kundali" in Marathi.

Jai Shri Ram!

The seventh mantra of the Vedanga Jyotisham of 14th century BCE, which is the first indigenous astronomical work available as on date, has said
svaraakramete somaarkav yada saakam savasavav
syat tad adiyugam maghastapah shuklo ayanam hyudak

And this is how Pandit S. B. Dikshit (a Maharashtrian Brahmin of unparalleled scholarship! ) has translated it in his "History of Indian Astronomy"
*When the sun and the moon while moving in the sky, come to Vasava (Dhanishtha, Beta Delhpini) star together, then the yuga, the Magha month, the Tapas, the light half of the month and the winter solstice, all commence together*
It is thus clear that the Vedic texts clubbed Tapas with Magha, Tapasya with Phalguna, Madhu with Chaitra and so on.
I must repeat here that you are trying to defend the so called nirayana mess created by Shri Mendki without having read the Valmiki Ramayana from cover to cover. If you had read the work completely, you would have realized that Shri Mendki is absolutely wrong in his prsumptions of nirayana months in that work and you are defending a wrong stand!
Jai Shri Ram!

MY 135th OPEN MESSAGE TO ALL PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL

Once again Uri Avnery is fooling the Palestinian leaders, and once again Ma'an and the Palestine Chronicle websites republish his zionist propaganda piece (see :
http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=304002 ) and with no reservations.

Under the title, All quiet on the eastern front, this top Israeli zionist impostor's article purports to oppose the zionist policies of the present government. Yet it must be clear to the author that those have been the policies of the zionist apartheid regime of Israel for over 62 years. Had Avnery been sincere in his criticism of the present government he would have opposed the racist/fascist regime too, but he doesn't. He is still loyal to zionism and to the zionist apartheid regime of Israel, no matter what !

Thus, for example, he calls the deliberate zionist policy of territorial expansion "
a doubtful theory" rather than condemn it for what it is. The zionist apartheid regime of Israel is bent on territorial expansion, ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and the building of a zionist empire, all of which lead to war not to peace. In doing so this racist regime has the full support of the USA and the EU rulers. How can any Israeli peace activist ignore these facts ?

The current policies of most Palestinian leaders are in line with the Avnery-Chomsky propaganda, which explains Ma'an and Palestine Chronicle editors' collaboration with Uri Avnery , the zionist impostor. A recent open letter by Palestinians to Mahmoud Abbas strongly opposes and condemns this treacherous trend ( see : http://uruknet.com/?p=m68396&hd=&size=1&l=e ). Under the title, Don't deny our rights, the letter's signatories state that they "are united in our commitment to the fulfillment of the fundamental rights of all Palestinians, particularly our inalienable right to self-determination. This universally sanctioned right encompasses, at a minimum, freedom from occupation and colonization in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including Jerusalem; full equality for Palestinian citizens of Israel; and the right of return for Palestinian refugees and their descendants."

This strong and defiant statement cannot be reconciled with the Avnery-Chomsky impostors' zionist propaganda which the Palestinian leaders follow. Nor can it be reconciled with their approval of Raji Sourani's betrayal of myself and my children to the deadly and ongoing zionist Gestapo torture here, in Australia.

Obviously, with every passing day of Palestinian betrayal of my daughter, of my son and of myself to the zionist Gestapo; and with every passing day of the zionist Gestapo's ongoing deadly torture of us; and with every passing day of treachery by Raji Sourani and his cronies the Palestinian cause is diminished, the international solidarity with it is shrinking, and the Palestinian self inflicted disasters would multiply.

Under such circumstances the only hope left for us is the solidarity protests by all people of good will around the world.

I therefore ask again every reader to send immediately protest messages to the following email addresses, and with a copy to my email address (ben.merhav@gmail.com or benjaminmerhav@hotmail.com ).

1. to the Australian government (email  Julia.Gillard.MP@aph.gov.au;r.mcclelland.mp@aph.gov.au) a message along the following lines :

" I protest the continuous torture of the Australian citizen Benjamin Merhav by sleep deprivation and his daughter and son by psychiatric torture in Melbourne, Australia.

This torture is perpetrated against Benjamin Merhav directly by the clandestine arm of the State of Israel (the zionist Gestapo), and indirectly by the same culprit against Benjamin's daughter and son.

I demand that the Australian government instruct ASIO to protect these Australian citizens, and stop these terrorist crimes by a foreign government on Australian soil immediately !"

2. to ICJ-Australia and ICJ Secretariat (email president@icj-aust.org.au,chair@icj-aust.org.au,sec-gen@icj-aust.org.au,
info@icj.dk,info@icj.org
) a message along the following lines :

"I protest your refusal to investigate Benjamin Merhav's complaint against the Australian government's approval of ASIO's violation of the rule of law in Australia, regarding the continuous torture in Melbourne of himself, his daughter and his son , all Australian citizens, by the clandestine arm of the State of Israel (the zionist Gestapo).

I demand your immediate intervention to protect these Australian citizens, to stop the perpetration of these terrorist crimes In Australia, and to end these violations of the rule of law by the Australian government in Australia."

3. to the PCHR and to all the Palestinian leaders in occupied Palestine ( email
english@palestine-info.co.uk ;
pchr@pchrgaza.org
) message along the following
lines :

"I protest the betrayal of Benjamin Merhav by Raji Sourani to the zionist Gestapo's torture. I demand Sourani's replacement on the ICJ and on FIDH with a honest Palestinian patriot who would initiate protest action against the torture of Benjamin Merhav, his daughter, and his son by the zionist Gestapo in Australia.

I demand that the Palestinian leaders encourage Palestinians and their supporters to protest this ongoing terrorist torture by the zionist Gestapo, and to demand that it should stop immediately."
=====================

DISBAND NOW THE ZIONIST APARTEHEID REGIME OF ISRAEL !

A JUST SOLUTION TO THE ZIONIST CONFLICT IN PALESTINE CANNOT BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT FIRST DISBANDING THE ZIONIST APARTHEID REGIME OF ISRAEL !

FOLLOWING THE DISBANDING OF THIS RACIST REGIME, A DEMOCRATIC, NON-RACIST STATE, TO WHICH ALL THE PALESTINIAN REFUGEES WOULD BE INVITED TO RETURN, SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED ON THE ENTIRE AREA OF HISTORIC PALESTINE !

THIS SHOULD BE WRITTEN INTO THE PLATFORM OF THE BDS MOVEMENT NOW, AS THE PURPOSE OF THE INTERNATIONAL BOYCOTT OF THE ZIONIST APARTHEID REGIME OF ISRAEL !

"Prior to the Iraq invasion, Eason Jordan of CNN said, "... I went to the Pentagon myself several times before the war started and met with important people there and said, for instance, at CNN here are the generals we're thinking of retaining to advise us on the air and off about the war, and we got a big thumbs up on all of them. That was important."

War Is Suicide

By John Cory, Reader Supported News

31 July 2010

Reader Supported News | Perspective

ar is suicide.

It kills in arterial spurts and oozes death in listless unhurried drops. It festers and weeps with the puss of infectious fear and chills the bone in fevered sweat. It explodes in vainglorious sparkle and whimpers in smoldering insanity long after the drums go silent. War is obscenity made sacred.

We cloak ourselves in the body armor of language as protection against the truth. Carefully marketed words meant to inoculate us against the viral indiscriminate violence and provide anesthesia to numb us to the slaughter of other human beings.

And so we die - one syllable at a time as Mike Altman and Johnny Mandel's theme from "M*A*S*H" plays in the background:

"Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see ..."

They say we did not learn from Vietnam. But that's not true. The Big Green taught us exactly how to get into Iraq and Afghanistan with flags waving and Congress singing on the steps of the Capitol and the media in full battle-rattle ready to take us on a ride alongside "our brave troops."

"That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please."

I once wrote: "They say that the first casualty of war is truth but they are wrong. The first casualty of war is reality - the unreal becomes real and truth is a lie."

If you haven't read "War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us To Death" by Norman Solomon or watched the documentary - take a taste here and go get the book or movie. Perception is reality - and nothing beats a good Psy-Op on perception.

Vietnam taught three very important lessons:

1) End the draft. Get a professional all-volunteer military. Turn the troops into a fetish of freedom. They alone defend and provide our freedoms. Say "thank you" and be on your way.

2) Terminology is critical. "Friendly-fire" is color-coded to "blue-on-blue." Operation Phoenix is now the cool Tom Clancy-sounding "Black Ops" elite Rambo-like warriors striking fear in the hearts and minds of evil-doers. No atrocity here.

3) Corporatize the military, media and defence industry. Mergers are good. Prior to the Iraq invasion, Eason Jordan of CNN said, "... I went to the Pentagon myself several times before the war started and met with important people there and said, for instance, at CNN here are the generals we're thinking of retaining to advise us on the air and off about the war, and we got a big thumbs up on all of them. That was important."

"I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and ..."

Torture is "enhanced interrogation." Torture is acceptable when it is a police officer controlling an unruly citizen with a Taser. Digby here and here, and Glen Greenwald here show us how standard it has become. This same police state wants to make it illegal for citizens to film them on the street, while they demand more street cameras to monitor us in the name of security. Not to worry, crowd control is also coming our way after being battle-tested. And don't look up at the sky. Technology keeps you safe while watching over you. What's wrong with that?

A man recently told me that I was despicable for writing about atrocities and war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan. "What would you do if every day some Hajji was shooting at you and killing your buddies," he asked. "I would go home," I said. He called me an un-American Communist. He only believes what he wants to believe and what he is told by the media like this lede from CNN: "Battlefield justice or murder?" He definitely would not like this, or this. Denial is so much more than a river in Egypt.

"Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please."

The greatest recruiting tool for terrorism is Guantanamo some say. But these people are guilty and dangerous, you say. Really? What about the story of Omar Khadr? How many others are there around the world?

And what about the views we never see? The questions we never ask? The "collateral damage?" The survivors? The people on the other end of that bombsight?

In Badakhshan, where the Kokcha River rushes out of the great Hindu Kush, the surrounding terrain reminds me of the Grand Tetons and the Snake River. Steep mountain slopes and the grassy steppe is every bit the image of Jackson Hole and the Alpine Valley prairie - so much the same and yet worlds apart.

As I walked along the river a village Elder told me, "Afghanistan has never been conquered but it has been demolished many times. We live out of sight from the rest of the world until they need a place to fight each other. Then they come here and speak promises they will never keep. Their words are loud wind that blows out of the mountains and quickly passes after much storm. And we go on with life."

The other side of this war is hardly examined in any depth or with any human face and understanding. A Hajji is a Hajji and Johnny Jihad and Tommy Taliban are brothers of the same terrorist family. End of story.

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
'Is it to be or not to be'
and I replied, 'Oh why ask me?'

It is ironic that the two great disasters of recent times can be spelled: A-I-G. One, a huge financial catastrophe and the other, is Afghanistan-Iraq-Guantanamo.

It is said and repeated that "they" hate us for our freedoms; freedoms we so willingly hand over to the militarized corporate plutocracy on a daily basis. Death by Taser is the collateral damage of law and order. Drones will keep our borders safe. Warrantless wiretaps are the price for remaining free in an internet-connected world of terrorism. Privacy is a privilege not a right. Technology keeps our troops safer than ever on the battlefield. Invest now and get in on the ground floor of the growth industry of the future - Peace through superior firepower.

Iraq and Afghanistan and everyone else? Sorry about the collateral damage to you and your families, but some day soon you will be free enough to understand that it was for your own good. Here, have a Coca-Cola. Love you, man. Bomb ya' later.

We buy the victimhood of false patriotism. We buy fear by the barrel and servitude by the gallon. We sell conformity as righteousness and plaster billboards with utopian consumerism under the red, white and blue of "American Exceptionalism."

One war is too many and a hundred is never enough.

Our addiction has turned to infection and blood poisoning. Overcome by fever and sepsis we rationalize the irrational and succumb to the hallucinations and the sweet voices in the darkest corners of our minds -

"Cause suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
... and you can do the same thing if you choose."

-Peace-

RHINEBECK, N.Y.— Chelsea Clinton married her longtime boyfriend Saturday night at an exclusive estate along New York's Hudson River.

Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton announced in a statement that their daughter wed investment banker Marc Mezvinsky after weeks of secrecy and buildup that had celebrity watchers flocking to the small village of Rhinebeck for the evening nuptials.

"Today, we watched with great pride and overwhelming emotion as Chelsea and Marc wed in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts, surrounded by family and their close friends," the Clintons said. "We could not have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate the beginning of their life together, and we are so happy to welcome Marc into our family. On behalf of the newlyweds, we want to give special thanks to the people of Rhinebeck for welcoming us and to everyone for their well-wishes on this special day."

More than 400 guests were expected at the historic estate. Details of the wedding were kept fanatically close to the vest, with shopkeepers, innkeepers, vendors and restaurateurs sworn to secrecy.

Officials restricted airspace over the estate, and the area will remain a no-fly zone until 3:30 a.m. local time Sunday. Roads were also blocked off, and inconvenienced neighbours were soothed with a complimentary bottle of wine.

Some of the celebrities spotted in Rhinebeck for the event included actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, fashion designer Vera Wang and Madeleine Albright, who was secretary of state during Bill Clinton's second term as president.

The wedding took place at Astor Courts, a secluded estate along the Hudson River built as a Beaux Arts style playground for John Jacob Astor IV more than a century ago. The estate features the sort of commanding view that once inspired Hudson River School painters, as well as20 hectares of buffer space to shield the party from prying eyes.

Chelsea Clinton and Mezvinsky were friends as teenagers in Washington, and both attended Stanford University. They now live in New York, where Mezvinsky works at G3 Capital, a Manhattan hedge fund. Mezvinsky worked previously at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker.

Clinton completed her master's degree in public health earlier this year at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Mezvinsky is a son of former U.S. Reps. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky of Pennsylvania and Ed Mezvinsky of Iowa, longtime friends of the Clintons. His parents are divorced.
