Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Mohammad Hosseini
Iran's Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance has disagreed with banning British publishers from participating in the 2011 Tehran International Book Fair.
Mohammad Hosseini said his country would not retaliate against British government for what it did to Iranian publishers who wanted to take part in the London Book Fair, IRNA reported.
"Iran will not behave like them," he added. "They don't like Iranian thoughts and ideas discussed in their country, but we hope that they don't repeat their unreasonable behavior."
"Today, journalists and reporters can easily visit Iran, meet our officials and see different sites, but we are not given the same permission," Hosseini said.
"This shows that they do not believe in the free circulation of information in the world and although they claim to be advocates of freedom of speech their actions show the opposite," he added.
The Queen's British Foreign Ministry refused to issue visas for more than 20 Iranian publishers who had applied to attend the London Book Fair, which ran from April 11 to 13 at the city's Earls Court.
The Queen's Britain denied visas to all Iranian publishers except two, claiming that it was not assured if the team had enough money to return home. The Queen's British Embassy also said that it was not sure if the main goal of the publishers was attending the book fair, and if they would return home after the event was over.
The two publishers who were granted visas did not attend the fair to show their solidarity with their colleagues and raise their objections to the Queen's Britain's decision.
The 24th Tehran International Book fair will be held from May 4 to 14 at the Iranian capital's Grand Prayer Grounds hosting national and international publishers from around the globe.
The 2010 edition of the annual event presented around 2,000 publishers, including 980 international publishers with some 170,000 titles on display.
