CIA to continue covert operations in Iraq 26 Oct 2011 As the US prepares to withdraw its forces from Iraq, the CIA is looking for ways to continue its secret so-called "counterterrorism" and intelligence programs inside the country. On October 21, President Barack Obama announced that all US forces would withdraw from Iraq by December 31 and "America's war in [on] Iraq will be over." US officials, however, have made it clear that the CIA plans to continue the programs, which have been run by the Joint Special Operations Command and other military organizations for years, in the country. These programs include different activities such as the deployment of remote sensors that scan the wireless spectrum of terrorist safe havens to stealth US-Iraqi counterterrorism commando teams [aka assassination squads].

"We were among them and the numbers of Qataris on ground were hundreds in every region," said Qatari chief of staff Maj. Gen. Hamad bin Ali al-Atiya. The announcement marks the first time that Qatar has acknowledged it had military boots on the ground in Libya. Previously the gas-rich country said it had only lent the support of its air force to NATO-led operations to protect civilians during the eight-month uprising coup.
Gaddafi family to file war crimes complaint 26 Oct 2011 Muammar Gaddafi's family plans to file a war crimes complaint against NATO with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the alliance's alleged role in his death, the family's lawyer says. Gaddafi, 69, was captured and killed Thursday near the city of Sirte in circumstances that are still unclear, but it has been confirmed NATO aircraft fired on pro-Gaddafi vehicles driving in a convoy from the city. Marcel Ceccaldi, a French lawyer who represents Gaddafi's family, told AFP that a complaint would be filed with the Hague-based ICC because NATO's attack on the convoy led directly to his death. "The willful killing (of someone protected by the Geneva Convention) is defined as a war crime by Article 8 of the ICC's Rome Statute," he said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima station, which was wrecked in the events on March 11, may have emitted 35,800 terabecquerels of radioactive cesium 137 at the height of the disaster, according to a study in the Atmospherics Chemistry and Physics journal. Japan's nuclear regulator in June said 15,000 terabecquerels of cesium 137 was discharged.

President Obama has [insanely] called for $36 billion in federal loan guarantees for nuclear power plant construction.

Patriot Act Turns 10, With No Signs of Retirement 26 Oct 2011 The USA Patriot Act, the law granting the government vast surveillance powers that was adopted in the wake of September 11, turns a decade old Wednesday. But despite its namesake of "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism," the law seemingly is being invoked far more to target domestic crime than for fighting terrorism. The act, which has remained largely the same since President [sic] George W. Bush signed the legislation six weeks after 9/11, among other things gives the government powers to acquire phone, banking and other records via the power of a so-called "national security letter," which does not require a court warrant.

However, officials at Highland Hospital in Oakland said today that one protester, 24-year-old Scott Olsen of Daly City, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, was in critical condition. The antiwar group said Olsen, a system administrator at a San Francisco software firm, suffered a skull fracture when he was hit by a "blunt object." Olsen joined the U.S. Marines in 2006, served two tours in Iraq, and was discharged in 2010, the group said.

Hughie Elbert Stover was found guilty by a jury in U.S. District Court in Beckley, W.Va., of obstructing a federal criminal investigation, and lying to federal investigators. Mr. Stover, who had been security chief of the Upper Big Branch mine since 1999, faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison but remains free pending a Feb. 29 sentencing.
Dems: Bush-era Loan Deserves Same Scrutiny as Solyndra 27 Oct 2011 Congressional Democrats have asked House investigators to expand their probe of the Obama Administration's ill-fated loan to Solyndra to cover another speculative federal lending effort -- this one approved under President [sic] Bush. In a letter to Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.), three senior Democrats called on investigators to broaden their probe to cover a $267 million Agriculture Department loan to a Colorado-based start-up that tried to extend broadband Internet service to rural and underserved areas. "There is also no good rationale for ignoring the $267 million loan to Open Range," said the letter, signed by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), and Edward Markey (D-Mass.). "Your reaction to the Open Range bankruptcy could not be more different than your reaction to the Solyndra bankruptcy." [Oh, but it is. Bush got/gets a pass from hypocritical GOP sociopaths; Obusha does not.]
