3500 arrests, 120 PSA detentions

Most Youth Charged With 'Attempt To Murder'

Srinagar, Dec 29: More than 3500 youth were arrested while 120 people were detained under the controversial Public Safety Act during the summer unrest in the Valley, police sources said.

Giving the details, the sources said Srinagar district topped the list with estimated 1100 youth getting arrested who were charged with disturbing law and order.
In Srinagar, police said 550 people were arrested in old city while the rest in uptown Srinagar. Apart from that, police sources said 320 people were arrested in Islamabad district while as 233 in Kulgam. In Pulwama more than 450 people were arrested, and in Shopian the figure touched 80. Sources said 300 persons were arrested at Budgam, 480 in Baramulla, 100 in Bandipore, 125 in Kupwara, 100 in Ganderbal.

"Most of the people have been released after being charged under various laws," police sources said. "Besides, 120 persons were detained under PSA, including stone pelters, separatists and Government employees."

Shockingly, many of the incriminated youth were booked under harsh laws like 302 RPC (murder) and 307 RPC (attempt to murder). Other charges like 436 RPC and 13 Unlawful Activities Act have also been leveled.

"Many of the detained persons under PSA and other non-bailable offence have been shifted to jails across Jammu and Kashmir."
A top official said there are no plans to release stone pelters and protesters with immediate effect. "We would conduct several review meetings before release of any stone pelter," he said.

The three-member team of interlocutor's appointed by New Delhi comprising of journalist Dilip Padgaonkar, academician Radha Kumar and M M Ansari have repeatedly appealed for release of stone pelters, political prisoners and also allowing peaceful demonstrations.

However, far from fulfilling their demands, police and administration is still chasing the protesters and booking them under harsh laws.

The police are even monitoring social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube to prevent people from speaking against establishment. Recently a youth accused of beating a policeman six months ago was arrested after being 'identified' on YouTube.
