Strike whip strikes 39

Strike whip strikes 39

Calcutta, March 28: Thirty-nine government employees who skipped work on the day of the Citu strike were today handed copies of an order stating that a day's salary would be deducted from their April pay.

While 30 of these employees are members of the CPM-dominated co-ordination committee, the remaining nine works at the rice research station in Chinsura, and are members of the West Bengal Employees' Union (Nava Parjay), known for its proximity to the Naxalites.

All the 39 had in their letters admitted to staying away from work as they supported the demands that had led the Citu to call the strike on February 28.

Though a day's salary would be deducted, the state government has spared the employees the break-in-service clause it had earlier threatened to invoke.

A government official today said the state would not hesitate to initiate strong measures to uproot the age-old strike culture.
